CASE STUDIES
establishing a website
Area of assistance: Internet and related web based technology
Technology introduced: Windows 2000, SQL Server 7.0, Index Server, ASP,
HTML, JavaScript
Problem: Client needed a dynamic news, calendar and information distribution
system with an online product resource catalog. The system had to be designed
to allow administrative and executive staff with little or no Internet experience
to update and maintain content and navigation. It was also determined there
would need to be at least 100 pages included in the site.
Analysis: It was determined that many of the potential administrators
had experience working with desktop applications like Word and Excel. So their
daily responsibilities already included managing and distributing information
and content. We simply needed to add auditing functions for all changes, additions
and deletions.
Strategy: We had to secure the administration features of the web site
to prevent unauthorized additions, changes and deletions. All additions, deletions,
and changes needed to be audited.
Step 1. Through detailed analysis with the administrators, the type of content
(news, calendars, product catalog, events, .pdf documents, etc.) was determined
as well as the depth and complexity of the navigation.
Step 2. The database design, preliminary graphics and navigation, as well
as the content layout were documented and submitted for approval.
Step 3. The database structure was scripted and optimized.
Step 4. The administration pages for creating, updating and deleting all
pages were created, as were links, content, support data and forms.
Step 5. All administration and user pages were tested.
Step 6. The administrative staff was trained.
Step 7. The web site was deployed on an NT 2000 server with IIS, MTS, Index
Server, and SQL Server 7.0.
Step 8. Promotion and maintenance processes for the following 12 months were
deployed.
Conclusion: The organization now oversees a product designed for dynamic
distribution of information and resources to almost 100 associate organizations
with approximately 1,800 members.
