CASE STUDIES
mail and web servers
Area of assistance: Mail and web servers
Technology introduced: Red Hat Linux 6.2, Windows NT 4.0, Exchange 5.5,
Cisco 1601 Router
Problem: The client needed a public mail server capable of sending one
million emails per day, Internet service for 20 stations, two public web servers,
two public FTP servers, a POP3 mail server, an internal mail server, a VPN tunnel
server, a firewall, and mid-level network redundancy.
Analysis: The client's needs could best be met using a combination of
Red Hat Linux and Windows NT server technology.
Strategy: We installed the following:
1. A Red Hat Linux 6.2 mail server, featuring Sendmail, Procmail,
wu-ftpd and DNS to keep internal traffic to mail and web servers from having
to go outside and back in
2. A Red Hat Linux 6.2 web server running Red Hat Secure Web Server for two
web sites and wu-ftpd
3. Two Windows NT 4.0 servers, one a primary domain controller running Exchange
5.5, the other a backup domain controller receiving replication
4. A Cisco 1601 router containing a firewall feature set with IPSEC 56, service
limited static routes to the Linux servers and pre-shared key VPN (virtual private
network) service.
Conclusion: The client now enjoys a powerful and secure web and mail
system.
