data management
Area of assistance: Data migration, transformation and distribution
Technology introduced: Windows NT 4.0 Server, SQL Server 7.0, Visual
Basic
Problem: Data coming from diverse systems such as IBM AS/400, IBM DB2
and SQL 6.5 had to be consolidated for the purpose of management analysis and
forecasting. The data needed to be accessed via client-server applications.
Analysis: It was determined that a combination of Visual Basic, a third-party
data spoke program, and SQL 7.0 would perform not only the function of transforming
the data but also of warehousing the data.
Strategy: Install and configure SQL 7.0 and methodically transform the
data for deployment and analysis.
Step 1. Analyze and document the data from all sources including IBM AS/400,
IBM ES-9000 and client server database MS SQL 6.5
Step 2. Verify and install the necessary NT 4.0 service packs for SQL 7.0
Step 3. Backup and script existing databases in order to prepare for the
upgrade from MS SQL 6.5 to SQL 7.0
Step 4. Migrate and transform data from all sources
Step 5. Optimize, script and backup the new target database for warehouse
functionality
Step 6. Create client/server system and application processes for data distribution,
utilizing standard office application and crystal reports
Conclusion: The organization now enjoys a single view of exploitable
data normally residing on separate, diverse systems.
